The Terran diaspora is the dispersion of Terrans, or Earthlings from their home-world (Earth) and their subsequent settlement around the Sol system and neighboring star systems.
From 2139 to 2160, 2 billion people left Earth (with many returning home), primarily to Venus and the outer solar system colonies. These populations also multiplied rapidly in their new habitats; much more so than the populations on Earth.
Scale of Emigration 2023-2081[]
The settlement of Mars starting in 2024 stimulated a steady stream of voluntary migration from Earth. About 10 million settled in the American colonies on Mars prior to 2081, a small initial population compared to the 30 million who settled in Cislunar space, but the Martian population was far more self-sustaining and grew to 30 million naturally before 2081. Roughly one and a half billion terrans settled in the Colonies between 2081 and 2130. However, very small compared to emigration following the end of the Third Mexican War, nevertheless the size movement in early modern populations is substantial.
Prior to Martian habitability, the United States sent a steady flow of government officials, entrepreneurs, people from the technical classes and their families averaging roughly 172-thousand people per year. In first decade of colonization the flow of colonials was actually much lower, with only 100 colonists settling on Mars in 2023. However, with advances in space travel, the rate of growth quickly accelerated. By 2030 25,000 people settled on Mars, by 2040 more than 100,000 made the passage. The advent of O'Neil Ships dramatically increased the volume of colonization as humans could live comfortably in extremely large volume habitats on the transit from Earth.
Second wave of Martian colonization (2081-2130)[]
Following the Opening of Mars in 2081, emigration from Earth grew rapidly, thanks in part to the build-up of space elevator traffic after World War III and the growth of the O'Neil Ship fleet. Unlike early colonization which was limited to the wealthy and the technically essential, colonization in this era was open to any and all who were willing to make the passage, averaging nearly 30-million people per year transported on first generation O'Neil Ships (numbering 19 in 2081, the fleet had grown to 72 ships by 2130).
Post-war diaspora (2139-present)[]
The end of the Third Mexican War led to the largest wave of colonization in history, with an average of 100 million people leaving Earth every year after the end of the conflict. This is in large part due to the rise of gravity drive ships and access to teleported energy from the Sol Dyson sphere. These two technologies gave rise to a generation of small spacecraft capable of sub-light speeds. As a result, in 2150 alone, 300 million people had left the Earth for Venus and the outer colonies.
